Three Reasons Why Windows Vista Is Sinking Like A Rock

Lately it sure seems like a day does not go by where I don’t run across at least one or two news stories about how annoying Microsoft’s Windows Vista is. A recent article on CNN is a prime example of how bad the reception of Vista has been from folks who simply know better. Talk of limitations on virtualization and media playback combined with hardware and software compatibility problems are making Vista look very bad in comparison to even Windows XP. Of course some of these issues might be addressed over the next few months but I think I have three good reasons why Vista is making for the bottom faster than you might think.

Unless you have been living under a rock you may have already read some of the early impressions of Windows Vista. Even those early reviews reminded everyone that Vista was still a very new product and it would have some rough edges. What many seemed to have missed was just how annoying Windows Vista really is. Here are just three examples of why Windows Vista is destined to be compared to Windows Millennium and why Microsoft is already directing significant efforts on producing something to replace it within the next two years.

1. DRM problems and lack of anything even remotely demonstrating an understanding of how users want to use digital media.
Although there has already been a significant amount of bad press regarding DRM (Digital Rights Management) features and limitations under Windows Vista I think it is worth noting just how unrealistic Microsoft really is in thinking folks are going to go quietly when forced into such restrictions. Seriously, as people become more accustomed to using digital media they are going to expect greater freedoms not more restrictions. Windows Vista imposes (and has the capability to do much more) in some cases severe restrictions on how people can use media they already own. Most of the folks I know are going to dump Vista the second they get even the slightest indication that they can’t play something that used to work just fine under XP. Not that I advocate piracy but going to extremes to prevent a tiny number of users doing something wrong is almost as bad as the piracy itself. Of course you can expect that someone will write a work-around any day now for most of these restrictions anyway but just having them there to begin with is adding insult to injury.

2. Limits on how Vista can be used under Virtualization and activation requirements are chasing away users.
Like the CNN article indicates, the lack of support for virtualization in the cheaper versions of Windows Vista is definitely a marketing tactic. In fact, after thinking about this issue a bit I am willing to even claim that this is really a defensive move by Microsoft. The intent here is to prevent folks from running Windows Vista under other operating systems (virtualized) since this would erode existing Microsoft partnerships with PC makers. I also suspect they don’t want this to happen for several other reasons, not the least of which might be how quickly users of Mac OSX (or Ubuntu) might discover just how bad Vista is and forget they ever installed it.

UPDATE!!! Looks like the NY Times is weighing in on the virtualization issue…

3. Lack of stable drivers for key features is scaring both gamers and power users away from Windows Vista.
Like I myself discovered, Vista lacks the kind of stable driver support that we all had come to expect from Windows XP (did I say “stable” and “XP” in the same sentence!). Recent problems with video drivers has many early adopters who expected to be able to play common 3d games up in arms. Other problems with performance on even brand new hardware have driven many power users to uninstall Windows Vista in favor of XP for the time being. Given that Vista is very new some problems were to be expected, however the sheer number of complaints has been growing and with many corporations starting to impose temporary bans on Vista purchases I can’t see things getting better anytime soon.

Of course Windows Vista will eventually get better, but very much like Windows Millennium I suspect that by the time most of the issues have been resolved many folks will have moved on. Perhaps to whatever Microsoft comes up with to replace Vista, or maybe to other competing operating system.

Yes, you DID say "XP" and "stable" in the same sentence. It's not something shocking you know, BECAUSE XP IS VERY STABLE!

My two XP boxes, one DEV and one GAME, have not suffered a crash in over 6 months. When the video cards crash (GAME) the dirvers resurrect it. Hell, my VMs can even crash on my DEV box, and nothing goes with it.

DRM has been talked to death if u dont know what it is or why its there then you should give up using computers .. or watched media your choice.

OSX completely forbids virtulisation.. yet encorages people to run windows on the Apple (Intel) machines. To put this as a point against windows and for osx .. is nieve at best .. but somehow i think u knew that so youd just rather lie to make your point.

Drivers are developed by the people who sell the hardware. Hence why osx crashes with so many third party devices. IT has nothing to do with "vista".

Anonymous said...

I have never crashed using XP unless it was something i caused cuz i was too impatient and didnt have enough ram, or the money to buy it lol

Anonymous said...

Mac OS X does not crash when you use third party devices, most of the drivers are pre-installed. If you know what you are doing, you can plug just about any device into a Mac without installing the miserable software that came with it.

This fact-less article shouldn't even be allowed on the web.

Yes, However Apple is a hardware company and Microsoft built most of its business on software. A Microsoft on an Apple machine would make both companies money but Apple OS X on an Windows machine would kill Apple.

More BS from some one that like to bitch and moan that Microsoft is evil.

The DRM restrictions you like to "speak" of were put in to appease the RIAA and MPAA. You want to vent do so at them. Also, I haven't had a single problem playing any video or music file.

See OSX for Virtulisation problems as another poster said.

Drivers, again, are not Microsoft's issue. Vista has been in development and beta for a LONG time now and the hardware manufacturer's have had ample time. The only slight issue may be in Microsoft certifying the drivers. Again, point your discontent where it should be.

More crappy blog spam so someone can feel self-important.

I installed Ubuntu and immediately got all I needed. Office apps, video drivers, sound etc. Perfect.

Now, can Vista do this ? XP can't.

Here's a idea, if you're going to reference both CNN and NY Times, how about putting the freaking links in your article??? Hello? Links? New to the whole intraweb thingy?

I slightly agree that vista driver support is somewhat bad but this isn't Microsoft's fault. The real problem is with the vender's they have had many months to prepare drivers and yet to have done so.

I think you make some good points here. I personaly have never tried Vista, and I think I never wil, but those who I know who has switched from XP to Vista are always somplaning about problems..

Agree with brandon079. Especially the part about drivers - I remember upgrading a friend from '98 to XP and there was a driver issue with his GeForce 4... LOL! And everyone was moaning about 'XP is resource hungry and has crap driver support' - same idiots who ramble the same thing about Vista, but guess what, they're all XP fans now.

The article is poorly researched. I must admit, I had my reservations shifting to Vista, but getting my free copy the other day of home premium (attended a Microsoft conference late last year) and I thoroughly enjoy the new OS. It's been a week and I'm not looking back - we've got 3 XP machines, 1 Win2K, a Ubuntu Box, and my laptop running Vista. 1 week, crash-free.

"The DRM restrictions you like to "speak" of were put in to appease the RIAA and MPAA."

Appease them why? What will they do if they are not appeased?

Get a life.. or get Vista, you might like it if you tried it.

Vista is not setting the world on fire because there's really not a HUGE demand for it. Other than the security features, most users really don't care that Microsoft has a new operating system on the market. And, much of the publicity about the security features has been very bad (valid or not). Lastly, people hear nothing but bad stories about Microsoft's anti-piracy efforts - "it's gonna shut my computer down and delete all my data!" (once again, valid or not, that's the word on the streets.)
Word to Granny's panties.

All of you pc geeks quit yer bitching! I'm a mac guy myself but, I work with a bunch of windows guys and not one has said anything good about vista. all I hear from them is what pain in the ass vista is. Keep in mind that this is coming from hardcore pro-windows who are all MIcrosoft certified. They ALL say it is cute but....kinda sucks.

Real reason: there is nothing new that we need. Actually, we need less.

Innovation: transparent windows. DirectX 10.

Reality Check:

Mac-OS
- closed source (don't know if there are hidden dirty tricks)
- costly
- malware virtually NONE
- runs on Apple computers.
- drivers already installed
- bundled applications (good)
- bundled games (lacking)

Windows XP/Vista
- closed source (don't know if there are hidden dirty tricks)
- costly
- spyware/virus/malware/trojan haven
- runs on PCs (some other hardware architectures)
- drivers usually needed and installed after installation of Windows
- bundled applications (lacking)
- bundled games (lacking)

Linux (Ubuntu, etc.)
- open source (no hidden agenda)
- free (both in cost and freedom, support is also free BUT commercial support exists, not free)
- malware virtually NONE
- runs on PCs (many other hardware architectures)
- bundled applications (great)
- bundled games (great)

I personally enjoy Vista and like it a hell of a lot better than XP. I got it the day it came out and have had not one problem with it. The vendors are responsible for the drivers and they knew long before it came out that they had to get on the band wagon. I think Vista is more user friendly. I think the problem is that most people don't readily accept change and don't want to take off their blinders. Get out of your old ways and try something new for a change.

Last month I just spent THREE (3) whole days of my life trying to remove the viruses/trojans from ONE (1) Windows XP (yes, Windows XP) computer in our house.
My findings... despite trying many tools (including online ones):
CAN'T REPAIR THE DAMAGE DONE ...
MUST REINSTALL ... AGAIN!!!

Good thing I can boot the same computer in Linux.

Why is it that I don't experience these painstaking JOBS in Linux.
I can just do what I want to do NOT what I have to do.

top 10 reasons why XP works for me.

1. I dont need a new car everytime GM/Ford/Toyota release their latest models.2
2. If history is of any indication, Vista bugs will start showing up in the next 3 months.
3. Which means SP1 will be released after 6 months.
4. leading to further bugs in the next 9 months.
5. SP2 will be released in the next 15 months.
6. All the hoopla of vista will be worn out.
7. The only thing I use my PC for is to connect to the internet so I can communicate..
8. What I have now perfectly serves my purpose
9. Im afraid to install any new software of the internet since I expect some virus/key loggers are embedded in it.
10. Life is easy as I type these comments, Why do I want to complicate it by installing Vista

Having been a user of windows since 3.0. I've seen windows go through stages of both failure and success. Vista has a small fan base right now. The requirements are a little high on the computing end. But it has to last years.

It's like why most games fail to succeed. Too many hardware requirements and a small amount of users with that type of pc becomes a small fan base + lack of word by mouth advertising. Which is not good. People talk shit about the new guy right? Highschool anyone?

See, I dunno about you, but vista will run slow on most peoples machines if they have not bought a fast machine with it pre-installed. It will catch on like the rest of M$ OS's or it will spawn into something different by the time people need to upgrade enough.

I see a topple in what people deem is important in budgeting for a pc no? It used to be that you needed to get one more often. But right now they last longer than a car and still work fine. Why would the average e-mail web browser user upgrade there hardware unless there a gamer right?

Nuff said.

oh please...we dont need to go into all this rubbish about how its bad for this reason and this and this and this and this....

Simple, Vista is sinking like a rock cuz everyone knows MICROSOFT DOESNT DEBUG THEIR STUFF!

A rather foolish friend of mine got Vista, and it was buggier than an ant hill.

As a developer most of my really powerful low-level debuggers are really device drivers.

I have not been able to migrate to Windows XP 64bit and Vista is definetly out of the question!

Yes microsoft screw yourself out of the market place.

I am now running Ubuntu with Xen virtualization and supporting my Windows XP installation within Xen.

Anonymous said...

All I can say is WOW...
Almost all of you who have commented are completely off base with Vista!

First off, the DRM issues in Vista ARE due to the MPAA and RIAA. In a nutshell, mainly the MPAA have been pushing their uber-security tech (HDCP, etc) for all of their next-gen media (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD). If Microsoft didn't provide the DRM support, these media wouldn't be playable on any machine running Vista. Microsoft felt that it was not worth it to battle the MPAA on this issue, and just included the tech in it. The controversial tech (the implementation that actually downgrades media playback) is specifically applicable only to high-def media.

Second, virtualization...
Unless things have changed in the past couple of weeks, Microsoft is only allowing virtualization of and Enterprise (Business), which is what the post referred to, forcing people to shell out more money for use in a VM. This however is only enforced in words in the EULA. If I remember correctly, this kind of phrase was also in the XP EULA.

Integrity of Drivers are up to the hardware vendors. The problem with drivers in Vista is not necessarily them not working, it's whether or not the vendors have signed their drivers, which costs them a pretty penny. The generic drivers could be hard-pressed for compatibility, but I'm not sure of this.

Vista's downfall isn't by any means going to be due to these points in the post, but rather to other aspects of the "Wow" in the OS.

Vista's main selling points are limited in the sense that they are all old technology - Gadgets, indexed search, WOW-eye-candy. The ones that are actually new, are things that are by no means necessary, and could be completely useless (bitlocker, SpeedBoost, etc).

The biggest flaw in Vista, ironically, is its security. Vista is probably the least secure OS Microsoft has released. This isn't due to the incompetence of Microsoft, but rather due to their decision to re-write (actually it was their first time writing...) the network stack. The RTM vesion of Vista has network vulnerabilities due to the new stack that are decades old. XP, having been around for a while, has matured to a fairly stable and secure OS. Realize that XP's stack from the NT lineage is (not proven, but all the signs are there...) from the FreeBSD stack. As much problem as XP and 2000 before it had with network security, this was already a slighty matured stack (BSD comes from its own lineage).

I hate to see what vulnerabilies will be possible with these new technologies in Vista. Vista's lack of security and lack of new features (new to OSes) will end up being its downfall. Wrap that up with Microsoft's marriage into various software vendors (Patchguard/Kernel protection fiasco), and Microsoft will be bound and tied as it sinks to the bottom. It's only hope is that it can magically get some un-inhibited innovation, and keep chugging this their server apps and Office.

There are really just 2 reasons I can think of that makes Window$ being the most used OS.
1: Games are mostly just made to Win.
2: Most people just dont know better, and use whats "normal".

And only good thing I can think of about Vista is the DirectX 10 support...

And you who try to say XP is stable because everyone uses it:
If the entire population on earth smoked, would that make it a healthy thing to do?
Same shit...

I just hope they start making games for linux... Then I would be a happy man ^_^

Reading the comments to this article makes me laugh at the ignorance of you all. Do you all work for MicroSoft?

First of all, DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a designed application to allow only users who have the license to run a music file to run it. I'm not sure what Vista's DRM is, but I know it is highly restrictive and evasive.

2nd. Yes Windows Vista can be virtualized on ANY version. But, if you bother to read the EULA, you are only allowed to virtualize Vista if the version you have is Business or above (Business, Ultimate, Enterprise). Otherwise you are breaking the EULA, and you suffer those consequences. Having said that, M$ has an inability to enforce this, but it is there.

3rd. Now this is where I really laugh. Stable drivers. Vista has been in BETA for MONTHS. ONLY PROBLEM IS M$ DIDN'T RELEASE THE APIS TO THE MANUFACTURERS.

There is kind of a problem here. Sure you can build drivers, but ONLY if you know how they will interface into the OS. An API is an Application Programming Interface. Now if you have no idea what is required to do what (like the print to screen), then good luck creating a driver. Sure you have the BETA, but w/o an API your sunk.

You people should pull your heads out of your a$$ and stop being a M$ pansy.

Now. XP & Stable. XP is stable. IF YOU HAVE XP NOW. STAY THERE. Always, always, always wait for SP1 to be released before you upgrade, otherwise your asking for trouble.

I use a Windows XP desktop for play & work, and a Mac Book Pro for work. The productivity on my Mac Book Pro is 10x higher, and it looks nice.

Another thing you people need to remember is that Apple is a hardware company. They design & build hardware, and they have an OS to go with it. Do you want the Mac OSX? It's open-source (the kernel is). Find it, it's called Darwin. Only thing that isn't open-source is the windowing manager & the overall GUI (look & feel). But you can install Mac OSX on a PC & write your own drivers (seeing as you all think it's as easy as sitting down & starting to type).

This is a somewhat true article, with a few facts a lil bit mixed up. I don't know how you all can use Windows, when you get stuck on the little things.

Yes I have used Vista. I broken it multiple times. I decided it sucked. And I nuked it from my machine.

I hope Vista crashes & burns, and M$ backs out of the game. Be safe, use Linux.

I am quite Pro Microsoft, it is not that I like their business tactics; I just like to pay a reasonable price.

When I started in the PC market there were two apps, Easywriter and Visicalc. Soon after applications started to flood in, but there was no windows, no cut and paste, no multitasking, every application had a different setting for the function and control keys. Every app had a different printer driver and apps caused each other to crash by directly accessing memory and leaving crap there.

Worst of all companies like Lotus, Novell, WordPro and Multimate would charge £425 ($800) for a single product.

They were very complacent and that is now Microsoft's problem, they are used to dragging users (kicking & screaming) into their latest OS. They usually do this by making their latest applications depend on each other and the latest OS.

So why do I think, here are the reasons that I think Vista is in trouble:

Well first of all it is way too expensive, over $600 in the UK for the ultimate edition and not much less for the rest.

What I wanted was a lean and mean OS that would make my kit last longer and give me a better ROI, the last thing I need is some bloatware that will have my users complaining of poor speed.

Thirdly there is no “killer feature” in Vista, it may be pretty but that is not what I need.

No wonder Uncle Bill announced his retirement, he could probably foresee this but he is so rich perhaps he does not care anymore?

The solution is for Microsoft to stop giving its developers the latest PC’s, keep them working on the slowest and oldest machines out there (perhaps with a bit of extra memory). Then they need to cut the bloat factor and optimise everything so it really flies on basic hardware. I think the final thing change they need is not to the software, but how it is sold. Right now they get the $600 every 5 years so it is $10 a month. I would cut this to $5 a month for single users and scale it down to $1 a month for volume, but for that I would expect them to scrap all the nutty license restrictions and include upgrades in a perpetual license. People leaving the subscription model should not lose access to the product but merely to upgrades (they should still get updates).

I think this would remove a lot of the piracy which is mainly there because M$ does seem offer little value, especially at the retail end of the market.

Users that experience problems from the lack of stable drivers don't care if it's Microsoft's fault or someone elses.

This is a classic example of how Windows doesn't support hardware, rather the hardware supports Windows, this problem is becoming obvious with the release of Windows Vista, and even more so with the migration to Windows 64bit editions. Other Operating System modems are designed around the OS supporting the hardware, so that upgrades are always seamless, from platform to platform, and hardware compatibility issues disappear once a device is first supported, it doesn't in future lose that support in the OS in the next release.

In this case I'm obviously talking about GNU/Linux, The Linux kernel today supports more hardware than ANY other Operating System. Think about that fact, the largest support for hardware ever, in the world. That is far FAR more than any Microsoft OS, or most others can ever achieve.

Points one and two are sort of ridiculous. 98% of the people who use computers on a daily basis have no idea what the hell DRM or virtualization even are.

Hell, most people have only figured out how to rip a CD in the last year or two after buying their first iPod.

Supposing that virtualization restrictions are going to keep my mom, or my girlfriend, or the secretary from upgrading to Vista is seriously delusional.

Alright alright... everyone is up-in-arms and insulting each other about reviews and such. Incase you haven't realized, that means you have too much time on your hands and are too arrogant, to boot.

Now, yes, Vista is a pain in the neck. I tried Vista Ultimate and it hogs resources and threw me a few curveballs, with respect to compatibility, drivers, and performance while playing a demanding 3D game. But it just came out, and just like XP, things will slowly fall into place. How long it will take for the majority of users to be "problem free", no one knows yet.

From someone running Vista on a decent machine (1GB of RAM, 512mb Graphics Card, AMD Processor), I suggest you just try it before dropping $200 to $400 on it. Everyone knows at least one person that has it. And you can run it for 30 days, without activation, before it stops working.

If you're playing games like GR Advanced Warfighter, NFS Most Wanted, Doom3, then I'd suggest sticking with XP until Vista is at a point where it's stable and compatible enough. Or unless your machine is a monster and will have no problems.

But if you're just surfing the net and paying bills electronically, etc, then go to Vista. It'll work just fine for you.

And stop all the insulting and power-struggling. If the most important thing in your daily life is making everyone think you're a computer genius, then you're a Nerd!!! Get a life!!!

Bottom line is: If you want to try Vista you can download the trial version and test it you’re self. Vista is bad for some people and good for others. I had an mp3 player that was only recognized by Vista and so on and so forth. I saw things in Vista that I didn’t like but most of these things are out of the box security settings. Don’t advertise OSX cause honestly I don’t care about that I have no Apple hardware.

As with women’s leggings, these seem to be designed to be layered with other clothing items, which do offer a little bit of modesty. Well, I’m not sure this is a trend that will take on, but if it does it’s certain to winter a whole new set of over-exposure solutions as we’ve seen with the camel toe! Moncler men Jackets , Leggings have been hot for women over the past few seasons, but I didn’t think they might extend to the other gender, at least not outside of sporting events that require down jackes, did you?
Stars are always exposed to dress sexy, but in the winter cold, like the design of Moncler women Jackets to help them wear down the United States and also warm. By the star like Moncler Show, which is a very strong brand.Do you even concern about what they are wearing or using? Do you know that which jacket brand stars love most? The answer is Moncler shop online

Woah! I'm really loving the template/theme of this website. It's simple,
yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say you have done a very good job with this. Also, the blog loads very fast for me on Firefox. Outstanding Blog!
